Green River Fishing Report 01/23/2018

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

The fishing on the Green has been good, we had a long period of above average temperatures but now the weather has turned cold. The river flows have been up around 2800 cfs. and steady at that level which has made the usual winter streamer fishing a little less effective. That being said the midges and some Baetis have been hatching pretty well especially on section B. Section A has been better on streamers than section  B which is unusual but this steady higher flow is also out of the norm for winter.  The hot tip has been fishing dries on section B on days that are not too windy. Streamers are better on sink tips and if you can change the tip around work a type 8 on upper A and type 6 lower A and  B. The hatches are happening best around mid day midges first and then some Baetis are out too.

Location

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

The fishing on the Green river has changed up considerably.  The late summer terrestrial fishing has taken a dive due to the colder weather settling in.  We are still seeing some fish come to smaller beetles, crickets and ants, but the terrestrial fishing has not been super productive.  Try smaller Chernobyl ants, hippy stomper’s, para crickets etc in that 14-16 size range.  If matching the hatch is your preferred technique plan on fishing Blue Wing Olives and midges size 20-26.  The fish eating bwo and midges are typically podded up in specific places on the river.  Targeting those pods will yield your best success with the smaller dries.   Nymphing has produced some fish for our guides, but it has been slow at best.  If nymphing try using small midge and baetis patterns as well as worms, scuds and sows.

While the nymphing and Dry fly fishing has slowed down some, other techniques have been producing some amazing fish.  The Streamer bite is ON and our guides have been seeing serious success stripping streamers throughout the day.  Decent numbers to the boat, but the best part is that in addition to good numbers, some excellent fish have been seeing the inside of our nets as well.  This is a great time to get out on the river with a 6 or 7wt rod slinging streamers.  If you want to catch the fish of your lifetime, now is a good bet.

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

The Green is still fishing very well with large caddis hatches happening on the lower river and good nymphing on the upper. It has slowed down a bit since the flows dropped a couple weeks ago but there are still huge fishing being caught. The fish are selective but will eat a well presented fly. The river is running clear now all the way to the Colorado border. Large thunderstorms have caused Red Creek to blow out once this summer, making fishing on the end of the B section and C section extremely difficult. However, if you can time it correctly the fishing will be very good. It is also that time of year to start fishing terrestrials and attractor flies on the Green. This can be some of the most exciting fishing in Utah. There aren’t many things cooler in the world than watching a monster trout suck down your big foam fly in gin-clear water. This is a great year to head to the green as the fish are strong and healthy after the spring runoff. The flows are projected to remain at 2,400 cfs through September 30th. Give us a call at the shop to book your Green River float trip for the end of this summer or fall. We have availability and the fishing should be excellent through October!

Green River Fishing Report 7-15-2017

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

The Green is in excellent shape now water is at perfect levels and the lower river has been clear. Dry fly fishing has been good to excellent. This is not terrestrial fishing we have been focused on the hatches, Caddis on and off all day, small dark brown Caddis. Yellow Sallies are hatching from 10 am to about 1 or 2 pm depending on the weather (much better on sunny days). PMD’s are also coming off in the afternoons (better on cloudy days).  The Green should fish well on dries for several weeks now fish are looking up and they are finding lots to eat up there. Some of the Yellow Sallie, and Caddis hatches have been very strong, you will inhale bugs if you are not careful.  Nymph fishing has been more spotty it is better on upper A. In terms of quality the fish on the Green are in fantastic shape right now, they can be challenging, but they are so worth catching right now!

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

Releases on the Green River are currently at 8,600 CFS with maximum power plant capacity and two full bypass tubes open.  The flows are anticipated to hold at these levels for the remainder of the Spring runoff.  The water is high and clear and the fish are used to this flow.  Look for feeding fish in the back eddies and slower seams along the bank.  Deep nymphing a san juan worm, scud, or egg attractor pattern with a midge or beatis pattern is to most effective way to catch fish right now.  Gray soft hackles or biot soft hackles have been working best for us.  There is a thick midge hatch and beatis are on the water.  We have also seen some cicadas on the bank, but not enough to sound the alarms.  In the slower seams and back eddies you can see fish suspended feeding on emergers as well as midge and beatis on the surface.  You can target these fish with either a dry dropper rig or a single point dry fly.  Try using a cricket, cicada, or cluster midge with a zebra midge or beatis dropper or  by using a single point beatis or midge dry fly.  You can also fish streamers deep in the slower water.  We have found white, black, olive, and gold streamers to be getting some action.
