We write the reports based on our daily experiences on the water and information received from customers. We update the reports as conditions change and our schedule permits. Location Area Small Streams Overview Most of the high alpine freestone streams in the Uintas are frozen over and unfishable. The smaller tailwaters are running low and clear. You might come across a blue wing or midge hatch. Location Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam Overview Releases on the Green River are currently at 8,600 CFS with maximum power plant capacity and two full bypass tubes open. The flows are anticipated to hold at these levels for the remainder of the Spring runoff. The water is high and clear and the fish are used to this flow. Look for feeding fish in the back eddies and slower seams along the bank. Deep nymphing a san juan worm, scud, or egg attractor pattern with a midge or beatis pattern is to most effective way to catch fish right now. However, there is a thick midge hatch and beatis are on the water. In the slower seams and back eddies you can see fish suspended feeding on emergers and midge and beatis on the surface. You can target these fish with either a dry dropper rig or a single point dry fly. Try using a cluster midge with a zebra midge or beatis dropper or a beatis or midge dry fly. You can also fish streamers deep in the slower water. We have found white, black, and olive streamers to be working the best. Location Lower Provo River Overview The Lower Provo is flowing a little high and cold for this time of the year. Therefore, the hatch is behind schedule. Some people are having success with midge dry flies, but it has been mainly nymphing using sow bugs, midges, and some beatis patterns. The midge hatch has been starting earlier in the morning and there has been some blue wing activity in the middle of the day. Location Middle Provo River Overview The Middle Provo is probably the most consistent river in terms of fishing right now. Releases from Jordanelle have been at 150 CFS for all of the winter. There has been a good midge hatch and some blue wings are beginning to show up on the river. Look for fish to post up in the moving water once the blue wings start hatching and look for fish in the slower water while the midge are hatching. Location Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam Overview Although the water is higher than normal for this time of the year, the flows are stable and the fish are used to it. You just need to look to softer flows to find the feeding fish. Deep nymphing, the tried and true day in and day out producer is definitely the top producing method. Streamer fishing the deeper, slower water has been quite productive as well. Dry fly fishing during the hatch has been good in the back eddies, slower edges and seams.
