Middle Provo River Fishing Report 6-28-2017

Overview

Fishing the Middle Provo has been great-granted you get good water.  The flows are still high(sub 1000cfs), but at least they are no longer running at 1700cfs.  Crossing will still be a challenge and is not recommended at the moment. That being said, our guides have been doing well nymphing with caddis, pmds, sows, worms, and of course-midges.  Even with the high flows we have been seeing a few fish eating PMD’s on the surface so if Dry flies are your top priority don’t rule out this awesome stretch of river.  As it is nearing the end of June, we should see some Green Drakes popping any day, but the hatch will likely be delayed due to the colder water and higher flows.  The Drakes generally start lower on the river near Deer Creek and make their way up stream day by day.  If you fish closer to Deer Creek, it is not a bad idea to have some Drake nymphs and Stonefly nymphs in your box, but dont fully count on it quite yet.

With the higher flows target the slower moving water and look for risers in the back eddies and soft “pillows” of water where the current rises to the top.  If you are nyphing, target the inside seams wherever you can find them as well as any run with a lot of structure and a reasonable rate of flow. In addition to that, pocket water fishing should produce with heavy dropper rigs and traditional nymph rigs.

Middle Provo River Fishing Report 5-9-2017

Middle Provo River

Overview

Flows have increased on the Middle Provo river.  There has been a good midge hatch and some blue wings are on the river.  You might also come across some Mother’s Day caddis on the water.  With the higher flow target the slower moving water and look for risers in the back eddies.  If you are nymphing try using a San Juan worm  or larger sow bug as your attractor pattern and trail that fly with a midge or a blue wing nymph.  Be mindful of the high flows and make sure you get your footing before trying to wade into the river.

Middle Provo River Fishing Report 4-24-2017

The Middle Provo is probably the most consistent river in terms of fishing right now.  There has been a good midge hatch and some blue wings are on the river.  Look for fish to post up in the moving water once the blue wings start hatching and look for fish in the slower water while the midge are hatching.

Middle Provo River Fishing Report 3-28-2017

The Middle Provo is probably the most consistent river in terms of fishing right now.  Releases from Jordanelle have been at 150 CFS for all of the winter.  There has been a good midge hatch and some blue wings are beginning to show up on the river.  Look for fish to post up in the moving water once the blue wings start hatching and look for fish in the slower water while the midge are hatching.

January and February Fishing Report

Snow.  We have seen an exceptional amount of snow this winter.  This is great news for the drought stricken west, but we might see an extended spring runoff this year.  At Trial Lake, the headwaters of the Provo, the snow pack is over 200 percent of average.  The Weber River drainage is looking at a snow pack that is 150 percent of average.  Lastly, the Wind River Range, the headwaters of the Green, is looking at a snow pack around 150 percent of average.

In the meantime, winter fishing opportunities on our tailwaters are available for those willing to walk through the snow to get to the river.  Winter provides a solitude that does not exist on Utah’s more popular rivers for much of the rest of the year.  Fish have a tendency to stack up in the pools during the cold months so if you find yourself on the water target the slower, deeper runs on the river.  The best time of day to be out there is between 10 AM and 3 PM, the warmest part of the day.
Throughout January and February there will be a midge hatch on most days.  Target these risers with single point dry fly presentations on 7X tippet or if you see tailing fish you can target these with a larger attractor fly with a dropper trailing 12 to 18 inches behind.  When fish aren’t rising, nymphing can always produce some fish.  The head of the pool and the tail out of the pool usually have the most active fish.  Target these with a sow bug and a midge.  During the winter months, eats are a lot more subtle then during the warmer times of the year so don’t be afraid to set the hook.  Streamer fishing can produce some of the larger fish during the winter lull.  White colored flies seem to be working the best lately, but don’t overlook olive, gold, or black colored streamers.  Present your streamer with a slow strip to allow time for your fly to sink to the bottom.  If you do not think your fly is getting down deep enough, put some split shot in front of it to give the fly a little bit of assistance getting down to where the fish are holding.
As the days get warmer and longer, expect the fishing to pick up with thicker midge hatches and some beatis activity beginning in late February and early March.
