Utah Fly Fishing Reports

Our Utah fly fishing reports offer a brief overview of current conditions on our waters. You'll find fishing reports for the main Utah rivers and streams that we guide on and fish regularly. Reports for the Lower Provo, Middle Provo, Weber River, Green River and Small Streams are included.

We write the reports based on our daily experiences on the water and information received from customers. We update the reports as conditions change and our schedule permits. If you don’t see what you are looking for, please give us a call at the shop or contact us here. We are always happy to update you with current conditions on many other Utah waters and fisheries in surrounding states as well.

Following are the latest reports in descending order of when they were last updated. As a result, you may see multiple reports on the same destination if we haven't updated one of the other destinations recently. Lower Provo River Fishing Report 01/23/2018

Location

Lower Provo River

Overview

The flow on the lower Provo is around 100 CFS. The fishing has been good Nymphing has been the most productive method. The midges are hatching and some Baetis, sow bugs in small sizes are working also. The river is not as busy as it was around the New Year, the cold weather is keeping some anglers at the vise and not on the water. The tip for the lower is to give the streamers a shot during the low light periods, mornings, evenings, or on overcast days. Overcast days with less wind we are also seeing some rising fish working on midges and on some Baetis. For those of you nymphing find a deep slower area and work the water until you find the depth and area with fish then stay there, fish are grouped together and not moving much to eat the small nymphs. Expect light strikes and be prepared!

Green River Fishing Report 01/23/2018

 

Location

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

The fishing on the Green has been good, we had a long period of above average temperatures but now the weather has turned cold. The river flows have been up around 2800 cfs. and steady at that level which has made the usual winter streamer fishing a little less effective. That being said the midges and some Baetis have been hatching pretty well especially on section B. Section A has been better on streamers than section  B which is unusual but this steady higher flow is also out of the norm for winter.  The hot tip has been fishing dries on section B on days that are not too windy. Streamers are better on sink tips and if you can change the tip around work a type 8 on upper A and type 6 lower A and  B. The hatches are happening best around mid day midges first and then some Baetis are out too.

Green River Fishing Report 10-20-2017

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

The fishing on the Green river has changed up considerably.  The late summer terrestrial fishing has taken a dive due to the colder weather settling in.  We are still seeing some fish come to smaller beetles, crickets and ants, but the terrestrial fishing has not been super productive.  Try smaller Chernobyl ants, hippy stomper’s, para crickets etc in that 14-16 size range.  If matching the hatch is your preferred technique plan on fishing Blue Wing Olives and midges size 20-26.  The fish eating bwo and midges are typically podded up in specific places on the river.  Targeting those pods will yield your best success with the smaller dries.   Nymphing has produced some fish for our guides, but it has been slow at best.  If nymphing try using small midge and baetis patterns as well as worms, scuds and sows.

While the nymphing and Dry fly fishing has slowed down some, other techniques have been producing some amazing fish.  The Streamer bite is ON and our guides have been seeing serious success stripping streamers throughout the day.  Decent numbers to the boat, but the best part is that in addition to good numbers, some excellent fish have been seeing the inside of our nets as well.  This is a great time to get out on the river with a 6 or 7wt rod slinging streamers.  If you want to catch the fish of your lifetime, now is a good bet.

Small Streams Fishing Report 03-14-2018

Location

Area Small Streams

Overview

Utah’s many small streams are beginning to show signs of spring right now.  Midges and blue wings are starting to hatch and fish are starting to become much more active with the warmer temperatures.  We haven’t had much snow this year, but be wary or snow drifts and mud when you are driving around.  A few fisherman are known to drive into fishing holes and get stuck on the way out this time of the year due to the ground thawing throughout the day.  Also if you are on a freestone stream know that as runoff occurs throughout the day it will discolor the water and turn the fishing off with the murky conditions.

Lower Provo River Fishing Report 10-5-2017

Location

Lower Provo River

Overview

The flow on the lower provo river has dropped 300 cfs since September.  With the cooler weather and class back in session, the tuber traffic has all but disappeared.  Now that the flow is hovering below 200 cfs, the river has started to become choked with weeds-meaning nymphing and streamer fishing will be a bit more difficult or tedious.  Our guides have been having success fishing sow bugs, midges and baetis patterns on an inline rig in areas with less vegetation.  The streamer bite is decent, but difficult due to de-weeding your fly every couple casts.  This time of year the Baetis or BWO hatch can be thick on the lower.  Focus on feeding fish near the banks if you are using dries.  A tandem rig with a more visible “point” fly trailed by a smaller emerger or nymph should produce fish in riffles.

As the season has truly switched from Summer to Fall, the brown trout are beginning to spawn.  Please watch out for spawning fish digging redds.  As common decency and good fishing etiquette require, please refrain from crossing over redds and fishing to actively spawning fish.  That being said, egg patterns should start working when fishing riffles to the rainbows sitting behind the brown trout.
