Utah Fly Fishing Reports

Our Utah fly fishing reports offer a brief overview of current conditions on our waters. You'll find fishing reports for the main Utah rivers and streams that we guide on and fish regularly. Reports for the Lower Provo, Middle Provo, Weber River, Green River and Small Streams are included.

We write the reports based on our daily experiences on the water and information received from customers. We update the reports as conditions change and our schedule permits. If you don’t see what you are looking for, please give us a call at the shop or contact us here. We are always happy to update you with current conditions on many other Utah waters and fisheries in surrounding states as well.

Following are the latest reports in descending order of when they were last updated. As a result, you may see multiple reports on the same destination if we haven't updated one of the other destinations recently. Lower Provo River Fishing Report 8-1-2017

Lower Provo River

Overview

The lower provo has been fishing very well. The flows have recently been fluctuating, but are holding steady under 500 cfs. With the recent amount of angling and tubing pressure the fish are becoming slightly more selective, but can still be found with the correct flies and drag-free drifts. PMD and caddis patterns have been consistently producing healthy fish in both the mornings and the evenings. The hatches have been pretty significant in the late evenings and this tends to be when the best dry fly fishing is. Focus your attention towards the banks as the fish are holding tight to structure, undercut banks, and overhanging trees or bushes. It is also becoming the time of year to break out the big bugs. Terrestrial patterns such as an ants or hoppers will also begin to produce fish. This can be especially effective when dropping a nymph (PMDs, caddis, sow bugs) underneath your large dry fly. If you are willing to deal with some pressure, this is a great place to check out right now. A little bit cooler in the canyon, scenic views, and healthy strong fish. With the current water levels in Deer Creek reservoir, it’s looking like the lower is going to fish consistently well throughout the fall!

Green River Fishing Report 7-15-2017

Location

Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam

Overview

The Green is in excellent shape now water is at perfect levels and the lower river has been clear. Dry fly fishing has been good to excellent. This is not terrestrial fishing we have been focused on the hatches, Caddis on and off all day, small dark brown Caddis. Yellow Sallies are hatching from 10 am to about 1 or 2 pm depending on the weather (much better on sunny days). PMD’s are also coming off in the afternoons (better on cloudy days).  The Green should fish well on dries for several weeks now fish are looking up and they are finding lots to eat up there. Some of the Yellow Sallie, and Caddis hatches have been very strong, you will inhale bugs if you are not careful.  Nymph fishing has been more spotty it is better on upper A. In terms of quality the fish on the Green are in fantastic shape right now, they can be challenging, but they are so worth catching right now!

Lower Provo River Fishing Report 6-29-2017

Location

Lower Provo River

Overview

The lower provo has come down considerably from the last few weeks.  It will still be difficult to cross the river, but the fishing has generally been pretty good.  We have been seeing a nice PMD hatch mid afternoon which has been producing some nice fish caught on the surface.  If fishing dries, focus on the edges of the river and the slower moving water and of course, wherever else you spot a rise.  Nymphing has been good as well, fishing seams and anywhere with some structure.  Our guides have been catching fish, “right at our feet” so don’t forget to fish close for your first handful of casts.

Middle Provo River Fishing Report 6-28-2017

Middle Provo River

Overview

Fishing the Middle Provo has been great-granted you get good water.  The flows are still high(sub 1000cfs), but at least they are no longer running at 1700cfs.  Crossing will still be a challenge and is not recommended at the moment. That being said, our guides have been doing well nymphing with caddis, pmds, sows, worms, and of course-midges.  Even with the high flows we have been seeing a few fish eating PMD’s on the surface so if Dry flies are your top priority don’t rule out this awesome stretch of river.  As it is nearing the end of June, we should see some Green Drakes popping any day, but the hatch will likely be delayed due to the colder water and higher flows.  The Drakes generally start lower on the river near Deer Creek and make their way up stream day by day.  If you fish closer to Deer Creek, it is not a bad idea to have some Drake nymphs and Stonefly nymphs in your box, but dont fully count on it quite yet.

With the higher flows target the slower moving water and look for risers in the back eddies and soft “pillows” of water where the current rises to the top.  If you are nyphing, target the inside seams wherever you can find them as well as any run with a lot of structure and a reasonable rate of flow. In addition to that, pocket water fishing should produce with heavy dropper rigs and traditional nymph rigs.

Weber River Fishing Report 6-28-2017

Weber River

Overview

The Weber river below Rockport has come down to a very fishable flow.  It is currently running around 200 cfs, but that could change up a bit.  The runs have changed up considerably so dont expect your favorite piece of water to fish the way it used to.   The fishing has been decent the closer you get to Coalville-most of our guides are having success nymphing with PMD’s, caddis, sowbugs and midges.  Don’t rule out PMD dries as we have been seeing a handful of risers out there-nothing consistent yet, but if you work for it, you should be able to find a few fish on top.  There are still a few yellow sally’s and golden stones flying around as well.
