Location Area Small Streams Overview Utah's small stream fishing can be great right now. Midges and blue wings are the main hatch, but you can see caddis activity and also tiny black stones. Fish are much more active with the warmer temperatures. Now is a great time to get out and explore some off the beaten path haunts. We haven't had much snow this year, but be wary of snow drifts and mud when you are driving around. If you are on a freestone stream, know that as runoff occurs throughout the day it will discolor the water and turn the fishing off with the murky conditions. Location Middle Provo River Overview Fishing continues to be great on the Middle Provo right now. The days are longer, the temperatures are warmer, and the fish are active. The midge hatch is still great and more and the beatis hatch continues to be strong depending on the day. Dry fly fishing can be fantastic and the nymph and streamer fishing is quite productive as well. Cloudy days will bring out the beatis and sunny days will bring out the midges. The middle of the day into the afternoon is still the best time to hit the river in the Spring. If you get there early or stay late the streamer fishing has been good before and after the hatch. Location Weber River Overview Water levels on the Weber between Rockport and Echo are pretty low right now. Once they bump the flows up a little bit more fishing will start to heat up. Caddis are just around the corner. For those of you who want more solitude the Weber is an alternative. As for right now, fishing could be good and although the hatch is a little bit more sporadic this time of the year you may be surprised with a great midge or baetis hatch. Sow bugs, small midges, beatis, and some cased caddis are your best nymphs this time of year. Try a lightly weighted streamer early and late or during the overcast days. Location Lower Provo River Overview Now is a fantastic time to get out on the Lower Provo. The flow on the Lower Provo is around 280 CFS. The baetis are hatching and fish and keyed in on them. Nymphing until the hatch has been quite productive and once the hatch gets going the dry fly fishing can be excellent. Midges are hatching in the morning and the baetis are coming off mid day. Dry dropper fishing with a larger cluster midge in the morning with a zebra midge dropper can produce some nice fish and then switching to a baetis dry once the hatch gets going to target the rising fish. Sow bugs in smaller sizes are also working. Recent Flows 280 CFS Fishing Great Current Hatches Baetis (BWO) and Midges. Location Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam Overview The fishing on the Green has been great. For the past few days the flows have started out at around 1200 CFS and have increased to 2200 CFS around 10 AM. This has led to quite a bit of moss getting stirred up, but has not really effected the hatches. The midge hatch is still very thick throughout the day and the Baetis are still going strong although some days are better than others. Look for fish to be sipping on midges and baetis in the slow back eddies and scum lines. The water is still cold, 42 degrees Fahrenheit, so fish are not suspended as much as usual for this time of year and will not move far to eat a dry fly. That being said, the dry dropper fishing and single point dry fly fishing is pretty good from midday into the evening. Smaller tippet and persistence pays off when fishing dry flies. Nymphing has been the most productive method of producing fish lately. The streamer bite has been pretty good on overcast days and in the afternoons when they bump the flows. Sink tips and a slow strip will produce some great fish. Lighter colors on bright days (white, gold, ginger) and darker colors on dark days (olive and black). The hatches are happening best around 10 AMmidges first and then Baetis. Depending on the day you can also see some caddis and tiny black stones. Now is a great time to get out to the Green River.
