Small Streams Fishing Report 03-25-2018

Location Area Small Streams Overview Utah's many small streams are beginning to show signs of spring right now.  Midges and blue wings are the main hatch right now, but you can also see some caddis activity and some tiny black stones.  Fish are starting to become much more active with the warmer temperatures.  Now is a great time to get out and explore some off the beaten path haunts.  We haven't had much snow this year, but be wary or snow drifts and mud when you are driving around.  A few fisherman are known to drive into fishing holes and get stuck on the way out this time of the year due to the ground thawing throughout the day.  Also if you are on a freestone stream know that as runoff occurs throughout the day it will discolor the water and turn the fishing off with the murky conditions. Weber River Fishing Report 03/25/2018

Location Weber River Overview Water levels on the Weber between Rockport and Echo are great right now. For those of you who want more solitude the Weber is a good alternative. Fishing could be good and although the hatch is a little bit more sporadic this time of the year you could surprised with a great midge or baetis hatch.  Sow bugs, some small midges, and beatis are your best nymphs this time of year.  Try a lightly weighted streamer early and late or during the overcast days. Green River Fishing Report 03/25/2018

Location Green River Below Flaming Gorge Dam Overview The fishing on the Green has been good. The river flows have been around 1800 CFS throughout the day.  There has been a good midge hatch and some Baetis have been hatching.  Look for fish to be sipping on midges in the slow back eddies and scum lines.  The water is cold so fish do not move far to take a dry fly this time of the year.  Smaller tippet and persistence pays off when fishing dry flies, but it can be quite rewarding and as water temperatures increase the bite will just get better and better.  Streamers have been the most productive method of producing fish lately.   Sink tips and a slow strip will produce some great fish.  Lighter colors on bright days (white, gold, ginger) and darker colors on dark days (olive and black).   The hatches are happening best around mid day midges first and then some Baetis are out too.  Depending on the day you can also see some caddis and  tiny black stones.  March is a great time to get out and find solitude on the river before the mid April rush. Middle Provo River Fishing Report 03/25/2018

Location Middle Provo River Overview Late March is a fantastic time to get out on the Middle Provo.  The days are longer, the temperatures are warmer, and the fish are active.  The midge hatch is still great and more and more beatis are beginning to hatch.  Dry fly fishing can be fantastic depending on the day and the nymph and streamer fishing is quite productive as well.  Cloudy days will bring out the beatis and sunny days will bring out the midges.  The middle of the day into the afternoon is still the best time to hit the river in the Spring.  If you get there early or stay late the streamer fishing has been good before and after the hatch. Lower Provo River Fishing Report 03/25/2018

Location Lower Provo River Overview Late March throughout April is a fantastic time to get out on the Lower.  The flow on the lower Provo is around 200 CFS.  The fishing has been decent and the baetis fishing should turn on any day now.  Nymphing has been the most productive method, but fish are rising occasionally along the edges and soft seams. The midges are hatching and some baetis are coming off mid day.  Sow bugs in small sizes are also working. The tip for the lower is to give the streamers a shot during the low light periods, mornings, evenings, or on overcast days.  For those of you nymphing find a deep slower area and work the water until you find the depth and area with fish then stay there.  The fish are grouped together this time of the year.
